Dubai continues to accelerate toward a cleaner, smarter mobility future. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reported a 23.6% increase in electric vehicle (EV) charging usage by the end of Q1 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This sharp uptick in EV activity reflects not only a rising demand for sustainable transportation but also the effectiveness of DEWA’s long-term investment in EV infrastructure.

At the heart of this progress lies the Green Charger initiative, launched in 2015 to support Dubai’s transition toward sustainable mobility. Over the last decade, this initiative has supplied more than 39,159 MWh of electricity, powering electric vehicles to drive an impressive 195 million kilometres across the city.

Speaking on the impact of the initiative, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, reaffirmed its alignment with the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030—two major policy frameworks that are helping redefine energy and transportation systems in the country.

Dubai’s EV ecosystem has seen significant expansion. As of the end of Q1 2025:

  • The city now has over 39,000 registered EVs, marking a 5.41% year-on-year increase from Q1 2024.
  • Registered EV owners under DEWA’s Green Charger program surged to 20,903, a dramatic rise from just 14 users when the program began.
  • The EV charging network now includes over 1,100 charging points, spanning ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box chargers, many of which are operated 24/7 in strategic locations across the city.

Public sentiment is also shifting rapidly in favor of clean mobility. A recent survey by Toluna found that 73% of UAE residents prefer to purchase EVs—an indicator of changing consumer priorities and growing environmental awareness.

To ensure seamless access to charging services, DEWA has integrated digital solutions through its website, mobile app, and IVR systems. Both registered and guest users can charge their vehicles conveniently at any Green Charger station, contributing to a smoother, more accessible EV experience.

This wave of transformation sets a powerful precedent for the upcoming Electric Vehicle Innovation Summit (EVIS) 2026 in Abu Dhabi. As the UAE continues to lead regional efforts in electrification, EVIS Abu Dhabi 2026 on June 29 – 30 at ADNEC Centre, Abu Dhabi will serve as a global platform to showcase these advancements, foster international collaboration, and explore the future of EV infrastructure, innovation, and adoption.
