ADNOC’s Kinetic Battery Pilot Boosts UAE Net Zero Goals

Masdar City, Abu Dhabi — ADNOC has partnered with U.S. firm Revterra to launch the UAE’s first kinetic battery pilot at the E2GO EV charging hub. The project supports Net Zero 2050 and could transform how electric vehicles are powered across the nation.

Rethinking Energy Storage: Kinetic vs Lithium-Ion

Unlike lithium-ion batteries, kinetic batteries store energy mechanically using rotational energy and recycled steel. This offers a more sustainable, longer-lasting alternative. The method reduces reliance on rare or hazardous materials and paves the way for a circular, resilient energy ecosystem.

Revterra’s technology could also allow the use of 100% UAE-sourced steel. That shift would boost local industries and create new jobs.

“The trial underscores our commitment to innovation – to decarbonise, diversify our energy sources, and achieve net zero by 2045,” ADNOC shared on LinkedIn.

Powering the EV Boom: E2GO Leads the Charge

The kinetic battery pilot is part of a wider vision led by E2GO, a joint venture between ADNOC Distribution and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA). With the UAE’s EV market forecast to grow at a 30% CAGR through 2028, E2GO is preparing to meet surging demand by building a nationwide EV charging network.

  • Target: 70,000 charging points in Abu Dhabi by 2030

  • Investment: Up to US$200 million in infrastructure and digital services

  • Features: High-speed charging, smart tolling, parking, and digital customer platforms

Backed by Policy & Vision

This project is not only technological progress—it is also backed by strong policy. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy (DoE) recently launched a regulatory framework for EV charging infrastructure that supports the UAE’s circular carbon economy.

“We welcome the ADNOC Distribution – TAQA partnership, an important initiative to support EV infrastructure in the emirate,” said H.E. Eng. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the DoE.

The initiative also aligns with the sustainable mobility goals of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT). It reinforces the government’s commitment to a low-carbon future.

National Sustainability in Action

TAQA and ADNOC Distribution both bring deep experience in clean energy. TAQA supplies more than 90% of Abu Dhabi’s power and water needs. ADNOC operates 31 CNG stations, including a dedicated CNG-only station in the capital.

“Decarbonising transport is essential to the UAE’s net zero drive,” said H.E. Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, Chairman of TAQA.

ADNOC recently awarded Revterra $1 million after the company won the ADNOC Decarbonisation Technology Challenge. The kinetic battery pilot represents a key milestone in ADNOC’s climate tech strategy.

In Summary

  • What’s New? Kinetic battery EV charging pilot launched in Masdar City

  • Who’s Involved? ADNOC, Revterra, TAQA

  • Why It Matters? Supports UAE Net Zero 2050 and local clean energy innovation
